Low-Carb vs. Low-Fat - Time to Retire The Fad

Low-carbohydrate diets have a long history of therapeutic use for obesity, diabetes and epilepsy.

Millions of people all around the world have tried such a diet, usually with good results.

Despite that, nutritionists and health authorities do not recommend such a diet and in fact claim that it is dangerous.

They claim that low-carb diets don't have scientific evidence behind them and often refer to them as "fad diets."

With this article, I plan to prove them wrong.

It is true that 10 years ago low-carbohydrate diets

Carnivores Eat Herbivores - Low-Carb Beats Low-Fat Vegetarian Diet

Diet fanatics are everywhere.

People pick sides and defend them as if they were in a war.

One of the largest and loudest fanatic groups out there are the vegans and vegetarians.

Now I have nothing against vegan/vegetarian diets as I'm sure they do work well for some people.

But some of their proponents make claims that challenge both common sense and science.

One of those claims is that a low-carb, high-fat, high-protein diet that is rich in animal foods is either ineffective or dangerous.

They often claim that a

Is Butter Good For You? 8 Health Reasons to Eat More Butter

Butter has been unfairly demonized by outdated nutritionists and blamed for everything from heart disease to obesity.

The reason, they say, is that it's high in fat. Saturated fat in particular.

The consequence of this unfair crusade is the appearance of artificial butter replicates like trans-fat laden margarine.

As Kris's law states, when the nutrition authorities do something that is supposed to improve our health...

(For example, reducing the amount of butter in the diet to reduce cholesterol and heart

Is Stevia Good For You? Health Benefits of This Natural Sweetener

Sugar is sweet. It tastes good.

Most people have a love/hate relationship with it.

Sugar is arguably the world's favourite ingredient to make food that tastes incredible and makes you feel good.

Unfortunately, it has a massive downside.

It also happens to be loaded with calories, void of essential nutrients, potentially addictive, fattening and perhaps even a major contributor to obesity and the metabolic syndrome.

As the obesity epidemic and the low-fat fad gained popularity, food manufacturers started replacing fat

7 Ways to Make Your Coffee Healthier

Did you know that coffee is the single largest source of antioxidants in the western diet (1)?

It also happens to have a ton of health benefits.

Yes, that black drink you have heard that is harmful may actually be making you healthier and helping you live longer (2).

It's true.

Any harmful compounds that may be present in coffee are way overpowered by other healthy substances.

Therefore, that guilty conscience that you get when grabbing the 2nd or 3rd coffee of the day, isn't warranted.

Why feel guilty about

Why Are Seed And Vegetable Oils Bad For You? The Shocking Truth

Modern nutrition has got it all wrong.

Often, your best bet would be to listen to what the nutrition authorites have to say...

...then do the exact opposite.

They tell you to eat a high-carb, low-fat diet... but you eat a low-carb, high-fat diet and your health improves.

They tell you to reduce animal foods, you eat even more of them and feel better than ever.

It applies to carbs, saturated fat, animal foods, eggs, butter and a thousand other things in mainstream nutrition.

This rule (I like to call it "Kris's

Is Eating Too Much Protein Bad For You? The Not-So-Bitter Truth

One myth that seems hard to break is that eating a lot of protein is somehow bad for you.

It seems that our evolutionary heritage as meat eaters doesn't matter, or the fact that our bodies are made with protein.

Why would evolution make us intolerant to something we've eaten for millions of years, and that our bodies are designed from?

Doesn't make a lot of sense when you look at it that way, but this myth is still there, even touted by various professionals.

Let's see if it's true, or it's just another myth of modern

What Are Processed Foods? Here's How to Recognize Them

There is often some confusion over the term "processed food" and what it really means.

Obviously, many of the foods we buy at the supermarket are "processed" in one way or the other.

We buy chicken wings wrapped in plastic, butter that obviously wasn't extracted directly from the cow and fish where the bones, head and organs have been removed.

We can not find these foods in nature, in this particular form. They need some kind of processing by humans or machines.

Of course there are some foods that can be pretty close to

Not Losing Weight on a Low Carb Diet? Here's What To Do

Are you on a low-carb diet, but not losing weight?

Perhaps you lost some weight in the beginning but now the scale won't budge?

This article will show you how to get that thing moving again.

Not Losing Weight on a Low Carb Diet?

I like low-carb diets.

I honestly think they are a strong weapon against some of the biggest health problems in the world.

That being said, we're all unique and it doesn't work for everyone.

Some people don't like it, but most of those who give it an honest try do great. Most people even

How to Win an Argument With an "Eat Less, Move More" Person

I often find myself in an argument with someone who doesn't believe in a low-carb diet based on natural foods.

Of course, I try not to be dogmatic about anything and I acknowledge that people are unique and that what works for one person may not work for the next.

In these situations, some people are fiercely passionate about their view on nutrition.

When people argue about nutrition, it can get just as heated and venomous as if they were talking about religion or politics.

Of course, when the time comes that some mad

Fact or Fiction - Is Drinking a Lot of Water Good For You?

A common belief in health and fitness circles is that it is somehow good for the body to drink an excessive amount of water.

A high water intake is claimed to lead to all sorts of health benefits, such as increased fat burning, more energy, less appetite, etc.

Here, I am going to discover what the actual science has to say about this.

Is there any real benefit to drinking more water than plain old thirst commands?

Or are we just wasting our effort filling and refilling those water bottles all the time? (not to mention

The 9 Biggest Lies of Modern Nutrition

As you probably know by now, I believe modern nutrition to be infested with a lot of corruption and misinformation.

In this article, I've listed the worst examples, but unfortunately there is plenty more where that came from.

Here are the 9 biggest lies of modern nutrition.

1. Saturated Fat is Bad For Your Heart

Probably the most damaging mistake of all is the claim that eating saturated fat leads to heart disease.

This myth was based on political decisions and bogus studies that were discredited a long time ago. Yet,

Why is Wheat Bad For You? The Bitter Truth Revealed

In certain circles, wheat is considered one of the worst things you can eat.

Right up there with sugar.

When I tell this to people, they are often surprised.

Wheat is everywhere, and they've been eating it pretty much every day since they were old enough to chew.

They'll say: "But I eat wheat and I'm fine".

True. Some people eat wheat and do fine, at least on the surface.

But if you look around you, if you look at the general population, then you will see that things are anything but fine.

There is a major

10 Reasons to Eat Saturated Fat (That Dietitians Choose to Ignore)

In this article I am going to outline 10 reasons to eat more saturated fat, which you may have heard referred to as "artery-clogging saturated fat" by outdated nutritionists and vegan proponents.

1. Saturated Fat Does NOT Give You Heart Disease

Despite what you may have heard countless times, there is no association at all between saturated fat and heart disease (1, 2).

In fact, saturated fat modifies certain risk factors for heart disease, actually improving them.

They change your LDL from the "small, dense (bad) kind"

Calcium May Literally Make You Poop Out Fat

I came across a study about something I find very interesting.

It involves dietary Calcium and faecal fat excretion.

But before I continue, I'd just like to take a moment and admire the types of scientists who are willing to spend their days weighing and measuring shit, for the sake of improved health for the rest of us.

It's dirty business, but someone has got to do it, and I am very grateful to those researchers.

Alright, let's take a look at the study in question.

Teenagers, Milk and Advanced Prostate Cancer

In this article I'm going to tell you about a study performed by a few Icelandic scientists, about the link between milk consumption in youth and advanced prostate cancer later in life.

You can read the abstract here: Milk Intake in Early Life and Risk of Advanced Prostate Cancer.

Personally, I've been kind of oblivious towards milk consumption. I'm not against it, but I still don't believe there is any need for teenagers or adults to consume milk.

It turns out that for men drinking milk during teenage years, it might have

All Calories are Not Created Equal

One statement I often see made by health gurus is that all calories are created equal.

"A calorie is a calorie", "All that matters when it comes to weight loss is calories in vs. calories out".

These claims are not at all surprising, since "conventional wisdom" has led people to believe that this is true.

Like I've said before on this blog, eating healthy is simple, but nutrition and metabolism are extremely complex, and all calories are absolutely not created equal, despite what you may have heard.

But before I get into

How to Create Printable Workout Logs

One of the things I find important in the gym is to log your progress.

It makes sense that you would want to know how many exercises, sets, reps and weight you did in the previous week, so you will know what you need to do to improve.

I often bring a log with me to the gym to write down my progress. It is always fun to go a few months back in time and see how much strength I've gained.

It is also a good idea to have your measurements done regularly. That is, your weight, body fat percentage, circumference, etc. Once per

Are Eggs Good For You, or Are They Bad?

Eggs are one of the natural foods that have been demonized by mainstream nutrition in the past few decades, mainly because they have a high amount of saturated fat and cholesterol.

It's true. A large portion of the calories in eggs are from saturated fat, and they contain a high amount of cholesterol. A large egg contains 2g (23% of calories) of saturated fat, and 212mg of cholesterol (1).

But, as I will explain below, saturated fat is just fine and the cholesterol content in eggs doesn't matter.

Are eggs bad for

The Art of Not Finishing Your Meal

Did your grandma ever tell you not to leave any food on your plate?

Maybe your parents told you to think about the starving kids in Africa when you didn't finish your meal?

Well, even though a lot of what grandma said was true, finishing every meal may not be the best idea in the world. Let me explain why.

I'm a binge eater. I can eat a ridiculous amount of food in one sitting. I can eat as much as three other people. It's crazy.

I've often wondered, isn't there supposed to be some kind of satiety signal in the body and

Keep It Simple, Stupid - Healthy Living Summed up in One Sentence

I'm gonna start this post with a quote:
"Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler." - Albert Einsten

If you've ever browsed the web to look for health advice (quite likely if you're reading this) then you may have noticed how incredibly complicated all this seems.

Complex vs simple carbs, meat or no meat, cholesterol, sugar and corn syrup, protein, fat, vitamins, blablabla...

You're right, nutrition is incredibly complicated.

Krill Oil Side Effects and Dosage

As a follow-up to my last two articles on the benefits of krill oil and the difference between krill oil vs fish oil, I should probably address the technical details of krill oil supplementation.

Krill Oil Side Effects

The main thing regarding krill oil side effects, is that if you have a seafood or shrimp allergy then you may be allergic to krill as well.

Omega-3 fatty acids have a slight blood thinning effect, so be vary if you are taking medications for the same purpose because they may interact with each other.

Krill Oil vs Fish Oil - What the Difference is

Here I am going to explore what the difference is between Krill Oil vs Fish Oil.

A lot of people seem to be confused because they are both sources of Omega-3 fatty acid awesomeness. However, they do differ in some important ways that I will explain here.

Probably the most important in favour of fish oil, is that it is much cheaper than krill oil. However, krill is more potent, gram for gram, so that should even out the price a little.

But when money is tight, fish oil or simply quality foods with natural levels of Omega-3

Krill Oil Benefits - What is awesome about it?

I've done quite a bit of research on krill oil supplements in the past few weeks and in this article I outline what I discovered about krill oil benefits.

What is krill oil?

Krill oil is a nutritional supplement made by extracting the oils from shrimp-like creatures called krill.

Krill oil provides Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) like fish oil, but unlike fish oil they are primarily bound to phospholipids (mainly phosphatidylcholine) instead of triglycerides.

Phospholipids are the type of lipids that form cell membranes
